Weeding doesn’t just happen in the garden. To weed, to cull, to sift, to declutter – what best resonates with you? Statistics claim that we wear only 20% of 80% of our clothes. Here are Tapioca Tidy’s top ten tips for decluttering your wardrobe:-
- If you haven’t worn an item of clothing for over a year then you’re unlikely to wear it again – let it go.
- We keep clothes sometimes in the event that we will lose the weight necessary to be able to fit into them again. If this is the case, consider letting go of some them. Keep some “skinnies” and treat yourself to a few new outfits when you’ve reached your ideal weight.
- How many of us say “it cost a lot of money” and screw up our faces and mutter “and I feel so guilty”. Don’t feel guilty – let the guilt go too. We don’t need to keep clothes out of guilt!
- Sell your unwanted clothes – there are a number of ways to do this; either E bay, Gum tree and or Pre-loved amongst others.
- Recycle– charity shops accept clothes that are not in pristine conditions and they can often be used as animal bedding and/or ragging.
- Donate – there are a vast amount of charity shops to choose from. You’ll feel good about the fact that someone else will benefit, appeal to your altruistic nature.
- Sentimental items – are you hanging on to trunks and old suitcases crammed with memories from old school days, special keepsakes from our loved ones? Taking a photo of that item can be a great way of helping to let go of that special item. It’s not the item necessarily – it’s the memory of that item.
- Back to only wearing 20% of 80% of what is in our wardrobe – focus on quality and not quantity. It feels so much better to have a few really beautiful items than a clutter of mediocre items!
- Hire a clothes consultant who can advise on what colours suit you, what clothes best show off your body shape and how to maximise the core quality basics in your wardrobe.
- Patchwork quilting, scrap booking and “up-cycling” are a great way of capturing and re-purposing some of your old favourites – like that pair of jeans that are fraying, the stripey blue t-shirt with holes in it, your favourite flowerly, elasticated skirt from the summer of 1985 or even your tie with elephants on it.
